The Calgary Stampeders had the bye during Week 15, and made an effort within the last week to upgrade their defense. On September 9, the Stampeders signed defensive lineman Daniel Joseph of Toronto, Ontario according to cfl.ca.
Joseph played nine games with the Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton Elks last season. He had five defensive tackles and one sack. Ironically the sack came against the Stampeders in a 23-18 Edmonton win on October 12.
Prior to playing in the Canadian Football League, Joseph played five seasons at the National Collegiate Athletic Association level. He spent three seasons at Penn State with the Nittany Lions from 2017 to 2019, and two more seasons with North Carolina State University in 2020 and 2021.
At the 2021 Canadian Football League Draft, Joseph was selected fourth overall by the British Columbia Lions, but did not play any regular season games for them. He was chosen behind tight end Jake Burt of Regina, Saskatchewan, who was selected first overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats out of Boston College; defensive back Nelson Lokombo of Abbotsford, British Columbia, who was selected second overall by the Saskatchewan Roughriders out of the University of Saskatchewan, and offensive lineman Liam Dobson of Ottawa, Ontario, who was selected third overall by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers out of Texas State. Prior to playing for the Argonauts and Elks in the CFL, Joseph played one season with the Seattle Sea Dragons in the XFL in 2023.
