Snowboarder Liam Brearley wins gold at World Championships

Snowboarder Liam Brearley of Gravenhurst, Ontario has won the gold medal for Canada. The 22 year old placed first in the men’s slopestyle snowboarding competition at the 2025 World Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding Championships in Engadin, Switzerland. According to Paula Nichols of the Canadian Olympic Committee, this is the first time ever a Canadian won the gold medal in men’s slopestyle snowboarding at the World Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding Championships.

Brearley posted a winning score of 90.15 points. Yiming Su of China won the silver medal with a score of 85.07 points. Oliver Martin of the United States, who is only 16 years of age, won the bronze medal with a score of 78.98 points. Brearley reached the podium by 14.05 points. Romain Allemand of France finished in fourth place with a score of 76.10 points.

In the history of the World Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding Championships, two Canadians have won the silver medal in men’s slopestyle snowboarding in the past. Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Mark McMorris of Regina, Saskatchewan placed second in 2013 in Stoneham-et-Tewkesbury, Ontario, Canada, and in 2019 in Park City, Utah. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sebastian Toutant of L’Aassomption, Quebec won silver in 2021 in Aspen, Colorado. McMorris won Olympic bronze in men’s slopestyle snowboarding at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeiongchang, and the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. Toutant won gold in men’s big air snowboarding at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. The gold medal for Brearley will give him confidence as he prepares for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan/Cortina d’Ampezzo.
