The University of Saskatchewan Huskies have won their third Canadian University Women’s Basketball Championship. On Sunday, the Huskies won the Bronze Baby by beating the Carleton University Ravens 85-66 in the championship final. The championship tournament took place at the University of British Columbia War Memorial Gymnasium from the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sport Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was the first time ever that the same university hosted the Canadian University Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championship in the same year.
In the final, point guard Gage Grassick of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan had a game for the ages. She had 35 points as she made nine of 20 field goals, seven of 15 three point shots, and 10 of 12 free throws. Grassick also had seven rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Two more Huskies players reached double digits in points. Forward Tea Demong of St. Albert, Alberta had 13 points, and guard Andrea Dodig of Bolton, Ontario had 12 points.
The Huskies won every quarter of the championship final. They outscored the Ravens 24-16 in the first quarter, 21-15 in the second quarter, 18-17 in the third quarter, and 22-18 in the fourth quarter.
It has been a sensational week for Grassick. On Wednesday of last week, she won the Nan Copp Trophy, presented to the Canadian University women’s basketball player of the year. Grassick led the nation in 2024-25 in assists per game (six), three point shots made (58), and three point field goal percentage (.414).
In addition to beating the Ravens, the Huskies beat the University of Alberta Pandas 67-58 in the first round of the national championship on Thursday, and the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 85-63 in the semifinals. The Huskies have now won three Bronze Baby trophies as they previously won in 2016 and 2020.
