Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia won the silver medal in the women’s shot put at the 2025 Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday. This was her first Diamond League medal of the season.
Mitton had a throw of 20.39 metres. Chase Jackson of the United States won the gold medal with a throw of 20.94 metres, which happened to be a meet record. Jaida Ross of the United States won the bronze medal with a throw of 20.13 metres. Mitton reached the podium by 0.33 metres. Maddison-Lee Wesche of New Zealand finished in fourth place with a throw of 20.06 metres.
This was Mitton’s 12th Diamond League medal in her career. She has now won two gold medals, seven silver medals, and three bronze medals.
There was also a national record set on Saturday in the women’s hammer throw. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Camryn Rogers of Richmond, British Columbia posted a throw of 78.88 metres to win in Eugene. However, it should be noted that the women’s shot put was a Diamond League event, while the women’s hammer throw was not. Rogers’s previous personal best was 78.62 metres at the 2023 Los Angeles Grand Prix.
Rogers won a gold medal for Canada in the women’s hammer throw at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The gold medal for Rogers and the silver medal for Mitton in Eugene will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
