
Sarah Mitton of Brooklyn, Nova Scotia won the bronze medal on Wednesday in the Diamond League Women’s Shot Put Finals in Zurich, Switzerland. For Mitton, it was her fourth medal of the season on the Diamond League circuit, and the 15th Diamond League medal of her career.
Mitton had a throw of 19.99 metres. Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands won the gold medal with a throw of 20.26 metres. Chase Jackson of the United States won the silver medal with a throw of 20.08 metres. Mitton reached the podium by 0.73 metres. Jaida Ross of the United States finished in fourth place with a throw of 19.26 metres.
However, there was controversy in the final and Mitton was at the forefront. Mitton had a throw of 20.67 metres with her second attempt. She was initially declared the champion. However, after further review it was declared Mitton’s throw was invalid as she had stepped outside the throwing circle before the shot put hit the ground according to CBC Sports.
There will be one Canadian competing in the Diamond League Finals on Thursday. Canadian Olympic silver medalist Marco Arop of Edmonton, Alberta is in the men’s 800 metres at 1:20 PM MT. Arop won the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
