Sarah Fillier records first career PWHL hat trick

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario recorded her first career Professional Women’s Hockey League hat trick on Wednesday. She accomplished the feat in a 4-3 New York Sirens win over the Minnesota Frost at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Fillier scored the last three goals of the game. Her first goal pulled the Sirens within one goal at 3-2 Minnesota. Fillier scored unassisted at 12:20 of the third period. Fillier then scored the game-tying goal only 14 seconds later from defenseman Maja Nylen Persson and Casey O’Brien. Then in overtime, Filler scored from Nylen Persson and O’Brien again with 15 seconds left in overtime.

Fillier is the first Canadian this season to record a hat trick in the PWHL and the fourth player overall. The other three according to Breanna Ebisch of the NHL Network are Taylor Girard and Casey O’Brien of the Sirens, and Kendall Coyne Schofield of the Frost.

On the season, Fillier has eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points in 23 games. She is a -1 with 10 penalty minutes, 72 faceoff wins, two game-winning goals, 16 blocked shots and 80 shots. The other game-winning goal came on November 29 in a 5-1 Sirens win over the Vancouver Goldeneyes. Fillier scored from Anne Cherkowski of Coldstream, British Columbia and O’Brien with one minute and 47 seconds left in the first period. At the time, the Sirens went up 2-0.

Fillier won the gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. With the win, the Sirens moved within five points of the Toronto Sceptres for the final playoff spot in the PWHL Standings.
