Sarah Fillier named PWHL First Star of the Week

According to the Xperience Hockey Talk on Tuesday, Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah Fillier of Georgetown, Ontario has been named the Professional Women’s Hockey League first star of the week for the week from March 30 to April 5. In two games with the New York Sirens, Fillier had four goals.

Fillier had a hat trick on April 1 in a 4-3 Sirens win over the Minnesota Frost. She also had one goal on April 4 in a 2-1 Sirens shootout win over the Seattle Torrent. Filler had four points and was a +5 with eight shots, four penalty minutes, one faceoff win, one game-winning goal, one shootout goal, two blocked shots and one hit. When Fillier recorded her hat trick, she was the first Canadian in the PWHL this season to score three goals in a single game.

For the season, Fillier has nine goals and 11 assists for 20 points in 24 games. She has 12 penalty minutes, 72 faceoff wins, one shootout goal, 17 blocked shots and 85 hits.

Fillier’s first game-winning goal came on November 29 in a 5-1 Sirens win over the Vancouver Goldeneyes. Fillier scored from Anne Cherkowski of Coldstream, British Columbia and Casey O’Brien with one minute and 47 seconds left in the first period. At the time, the Sirens went up 2-0. Fillier’s second game-winning goal came in the Sirens win over the Frost on April 1. Fillier scored from defenseman Maja Nylen Persson and O’Brien with 15 seconds left in overtime. Fillier’s shootout goal came in the Sirens win over the Torrent on Saturday.

With the win, the Sirens improved to 31 points. They are three points back of the Toronto Sceptres for a playoff spot. Fillier’s Olympic gold medal for Canada came at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.
