Ryan Nugent Hopkins records fourth career NHL hat trick

Edmonton Oilers centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Burnaby, British Columbia recorded his fourth career National Hockey League hat trick on Saturday. He accomplished the feat in a 5-4 Edmonton Oilers win over the Seattle Kraken at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta.

Nugent-Hopkins’s first goal put the Oilers up 2-1 at 3:48 of the second period. Defenseman Darnell Nurse of Edmonton, Alberta and Kasperi Kapanen picked up the assists. Nugent-Hopkins then put the Oilers up 4-2 on an all-Canadian goal from Zach Hyman of Toronto, Ontario and Evan Bouchard of Oakville, Ontario with one minute and 49 seconds left in the second period. Then Nugent-Hopkins scored the game-winning goal with two minutes and 17 seconds left into an empty net. The goal was shorthanded and came from defenseman Jake Walman of Toronto, Ontario to put the Oilers up 5-3.

Nugent-Hopkins was one of three Canadians on the Oilers to score a goal. The others were Adam Henrique of Brantford, Ontario and Jeff Skinner of Toronto, Ontario. Nugent-Hopkins was one of two Canadians on the Oilers with a multi-point game. The other was Nurse with two assists.

Of Nugent-Hopkins’s four career hat tricks, two have been in wins. The only other time Nugent-Hopkins scored in an Oilers win while recording a hat trick came on March 26, 2019 in an 8-4 Oilers win over the Los Angeles Kings.

In 2024-25, Nugent-Hopkins has 20 goals and 28 assists for 48 points in 69 games. He is a +7 with 24 penalty minutes, 19 power-play points, two shorthanded points, five game-winning goals, 140 shots on goal, 207 faceoff wins, 43 blocked shots, 24 hits, 26 takeaways and 46 giveaways. The other shorthanded point was a shorthanded goal and opened the scoring in a 7-1 Oilers win over the Utah Hockey Club on March 18.

With the win, the Oilers improved to a record of 41 wins, 24 regulation losses and five losses in extra time for 87 points. They are in second place in the Pacific Division and three points back of the Vegas Golden Knights.
