Reece Howden wins two World Cup ski cross silver medals in Sweden

Reece Howden of Chilliwack, British Columbia won two medals this past weekend in Gallivare, Sweden. He won a silver medal on Saturday, and again on Sunday. These were the final two World Cup men’s ski cross races of the 2025-26 FIS (International Ski Federation) season.

Howden placed behind gold medalist David Mobaerg of Sweden and ahead of bronze medalist Kilian Himmelsbach of Germany on Saturday. Then on Sunday, Howden placed behind gold medalist Simone Deromedis of Italy and ahead of bronze medalist Edoardo Zorzi of Italy.

In Saturday’s World Cup ski cross action, Howden won the fourth elimination heat and second quarterfinal heat before finishing second behind Tyler Wallasch of the United States in the first semifinal heat. In Sunday’s World Cup ski cross action, Howden won the first elimination heat, first quarterfinal heat and first semifinal heat.

Also on Saturday, Hannah Schmidt of Ottawa, Ontario won the bronze medal in the women’s ski cross World Cup event. Schmidt placed behind gold medalist Sandra Naeslund of Sweden and silver medalist Daniela Maier of Germany. Schmidt finished second to Canadian Marielle Thompson of North Vancouver, British Columbia in the third quarterfinal and second to Maier in the second semifinal.

Howden now has 40 World Cup medals. He has 24 gold medals, 11 silver medals and five bronze medals. in 2025-26, Howden won 10 medals (six gold medals, three silver medals and one bronze medal). Schmidt has won 11 World Cup medals. She has won four gold medals, two silver medals and five bronze medals. This was her second World Cup medal of the season as she won a silver medal in Craigleith, Ontario on March 21.

In the final World Cup standings, Howden was the men’s Crystal Globe champion with 1061 points. Deromedis finished second with 750 points. Meanwhile, on the women’s side, Schmidt finished in sixth place with 605 points. Naeslund was the World Cup women’s ski cross champion with 1268 points.
