Red Wings legend Alex Delvecchio passes away at age 93

According to Scott Polacek of Bleacher Report on Tuesday, former Detroit Red Wings forward Alex Delvecchio of Fort William, Ontario, passed away at the age of 93. Delvecchio played 24 seasons with the Red Wings from 1950 to 1974.

In 1850 regular season games, Delvecchio had 456 goals and 825 assists for 1281 points. He had 383 penalty minutes, 376 power-play points, 31 shorthanded points, three hat tricks, and 75 game-winning goals.

Thirteen times Delvecchio was a NHL All-Star. He was honoured seven straight seasons from 1953 to 1959, five straight seasons again from 1961 to 1965, and again in 1966-67.

Three times Delvecchio won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, presented to the NHL’s most gentlemanly player. In the three years he won the award, Delvecchio only had 30 penalty minutes in 212 regular season games.

Also three times, Delvecchio won the Stanley Cup with the Red Wings. In the 1952 Stanley Cup Finals, the Red Wings defeated the Montreal Canadiens four games to none. In the 1954 Stanley Cup Finals, the Red Wings beat the Montreal Canadiens in seven games. In the 1955 Stanley Cup Finals, the Red Wings beat the Canadiens again in seven games.

Delvecchio was the Red Wings captain from 1962 to 1974. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1977, and had his number 10 retired in 1991. Delvecchio also coached the Red Wings for four seasons from 1974 to 1977.
