Canadian Olympic gold medalist Patrice Bergeron of L’Ancienne-Lorette, Quebec won the Selke Trophy for the fifth time in his National Hockey League career on Sunday. Bergeron, who won the Olympic gold medal for Canada in men’s hockey at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, previously won the Selke Trophy in 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2017.
Bergeron has now won the most Selke Trophies (awarded to be the best defensive forward in the NHL) all-time. He passes former Montreal Canadiens left winger Bob Gainey of Peterborough, Ontario, who won the Selke Trophy the first four times the trophy was presented from 1978 to 1981. All five of the Selke Trophies Bergeron have won have come while with the Boston Bruins.
In 73 games this season, Bergeron had 25 goals and 40 assists for 65 points. He was a +26 with 32 penalty minutes, 23 power-play points, four game-winning goals, three shorthanded points, 293 shots on goal, 991 faceoff wins, 45 blocked shots, 78 hits, 37 takeaways and 21 giveaways.
The fact that Bergeron won the Selke Trophy in 2022 could be a surprise to some. That is because Elias Lindholm of the Calgary Flames had the much better season. Lindholm had 17 more points than Bergeron, was a remarkable +61, and had seven more blocked shots and 18 more takeaways than the Selke Trophy winner.
