San Diego Padres starting pitcher Nick Pivetta of Victoria, British Columbia recorded his 70th career Major League Baseball quality start on Wednesday. He accomplished the feat in an 11-1 Padres triumph over the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

Pivetta threw 6 2/3 innings and gave up one earned run, four hits and one walk. He also had five strikeouts. Of Pivetta’s 101 pitches, there were 60 strikes and 41 balls.

Offensively, Ramon Laureano had two singles and a home run for three hits. San Diego attempted to improve their offense at the bottom of the lineup at the trade deadline, and they accomplished that feat by acquiring Laureano and Ryan O’Hearn from the Baltimore Orioles.

On the season Pivetta has a record of 12 wins and four losses with an earned run average of 2.87. In 24 games and 141 1/3 innings pitched, he has given up 98 hits, 45 earned runs, 15 home runs and 36 walks, to go along with 144 strikeouts, and a sparkling WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 0.95.

Of Pivetta’s 70 career quality starts, 36 have been with the Boston Red Sox, 19 have come with the Philadelphia Phillies, and 15 have come with Padres. San Diego moved into first place in the National League West with the win. They are one game up on the second place Los Angeles Dodgers.
