Team Newfoundland won their first gold medal on Tuesday at the 2025 Canada Games in St. John’s. The gold medalist from the host province came from Gavin Biggs of Paradise, in the men’s 1500 metre wheelchair racing.
What Baggs has been able to accomplish at the 2025 Canada Games is notable. That is because a week ago he became Newfoundland’s first Canada Games medallist as he won the silver medal in the men’s 400 metre para freestyle swimming in the S6-13 classification. Baggs suffers from sacral agenesis (missing bones in spine which limits ability to stand).
Baggs was one of two Maritimers to win a medal in the men’s 1500 metre wheelchair racing. Dante Cormier of Riverview, New Brunswick won the silver medal. Cormier has cerebral palsy. Meanwhile, Tai Young of Markham, Ontario won the bronze medal.
Cormier was one of two medalists from New Brunswick on Tuesday. The other came from Remi Daniel Ouellette of Haute-Aboujagane in the men’s para shot put. Ouellette, who has dwarfism, won the bronze medal, and placed behind gold medalist Mathieu Dorais of Levis, Quebec, and silver medalist David Lipton of Saskatchewan.
Ontario and Quebec now lead the overall medal standings. They both have 105 medals. Ontario has one more gold medal as they have 37, while Quebec has 36.
