Michel Therrien of Montreal, Quebec has been named the head coach of Team Canada for the 2025 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland according to Rogers Sportsnet. This annual prestigious international hockey competition features top club teams in Europe and a Canadian team based primarily of players playing professionally in Europe. The tournament begins Boxing Day, and ends New Year’s Eve. It is literally the last significant sporting event in the world every year.

Therrien is 62 years of age, and has 12 years of National Hockey League head coaching experience. He was with the Montreal Canadiens during two separate stints. He was with them from 2000 to 2003, and again from 2012 to 2017. Therrien also was the head coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins for four seasons from 2005 to 2009. During the 2008-09 season, he was fired before the Penguins won the Stanley Cup.

The 2025 Spengler Cup will have an interesting addition. It will include the United States Collegiate Selects. The United States have had excellent results in international hockey tournaments lately. They won the gold medal at the 2025 IIHF World Hockey Championships in Sweden, and have won the last two gold medals at the World Junior Hockey Championships. Canada will be in a pool with the US Collegiate Selects and HC Davos.
