
Columbus Blue Jackets left winger Mason Marchment of Uxbridge, Ontario recorded his third career National Hockey League hat trick on Saturday. He accomplished the feat in an 8-5 Blue Jackets win over the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
Marchment scored one goal in each period. Marchment’s first goal came from defenseman Erik Gudbranson of Ottawa, Ontario at 8:37 of the first period to put the Blue Jackets up 2-1. Marchment’s second goal came from defenseman Zach Werenski and Charlie Coyle at 9:05 of the second period to put the Blue Jackets up 5-4. Marchment’s hat trick completed the scoring from Adam Fantilli of Nobleton, Ontario and Kirill Marchenko with 25 seconds left in the game into an empty net.
There were three Canadian born players to score for the Blue Jackets. Sean Monahan of Brampton, Ontario and Fantilli also scored. Marchment had a four point game as he also had an assist. Fantilli also had a multi-point game as he had one goal and two assists for three points.
Marchment’s first NHL hat trick came on February 18, 2022 in a 6-2 Florida Panthers win over the Minnesota Wild. Marchment’s second NHL hat trick came on New Year’s Eve, 2023, in an 8-1 Dallas Stars win over the Chicago Blackhawks.
On the season, Marchment has shared his time with the Seattle Kraken and Blue Jackets. In 38 games, he has 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points. He is a +2 with 38 penalty minutes, five power-play points, two game-winning goals, 65 shots on goal, 14 faceoff wins, 13 blocked shots, 46 hits, 13 takeaways and 50 giveaways.
Marchment’s first game-winning goal this season came with the Kraken on October 9 in a 3-1 Kraken win over the Anaheim Ducks. Marchment scored from defensemen Brandon Montour of Brantford, Ontario at 3:50 of the second period to break a 1-1 tie. Marchment’s second game-winning goal this season came with the Blue Jackets on December 22 in a 3-1 Blue Jackets win over the Los Angeles Kings. Marchment scored an all-Canadian goal with 24 seconds left in the first period on the power-play to put the Blue Jackets up 2-0 at the time. Defenseman Damon Severson of Melville, Saskatchewan and Boone Jenner of Dorchester, Ontario had the assists.
With the win over the Lightning, the Blue Jackets improved to a record of 24 wins, 20 regulation losses, and seven losses in extra time. With 55 points, they are four points back of the New York Islanders for a playoff spot.
