Marina Stakusic of Mississauga, Ontario has delivered her second significant upset at the 2025 Guadalajara Open in Mexico this week. After stunning the 65th ranked player, Polina Kudermetova of Russia, in the first round on Tuesday by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, Stakusic beat the 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, the third seed in the Guadalajara Open, by a score of 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 on Friday in the second round. The quarterfinal berth for Stakusic in Guadalajara on Friday is noteworthy when you consider the fact Stakusic is ranked 155th in the world.
In Friday’s matchup, Stakusic had the statistical advantage to double faults. Stakusic has six double faults, while Ostapenko had 10 double faults. This was the second consecutive year Stakusic has beaten Ostapenko at the Guadalajara Open. At the 2024 Guadalajara Open, Stakusic beat Ostapenko 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 in the first round.
Stakusic was to play Ostapenko originally on Thursday night, but the match was postponed due to rain. Due to the fact that the tournament was behind schedule, Stakusic has to play her second match of the day on Friday. In her quarterfinal match, she will be playing Emiliana Arango of Colombia. Stakusic is 0-2 against Arango. She lost 6-4, 7-6 in the second round of Cancun earlier this year, and then lost 6-4, 6-4 in Italian Open qualifying.
