
The Toronto Maple Leafs traded right winger Mitch Marner of Markham, Ontario to the Vegas Golden Knights for centre Nicolas Roy of Amos, Quebec according to Rogers Sportsnet. After being traded to Vegas, Marner signed an eight year deal worth $96 million.
Marner is joining his second NHL franchise after nine seasons with the Maple Leafs. In 81 games this past season, Marner had 27 goals and 75 assists for 102 points. He was a +18 with 14 penalty minutes, 33 power-play points, two shorthanded points, seven game-winning goals, 173 shots on goal, 10 faceoff wins, 40 blocked shots, 49 hits, 56 takeaways, and 106 giveaways.
Both of Marner’s shorthanded points came against the Montreal Canadiens. The first was a shorthanded goal from David Kampf at 8:24 of the second period in a 4-1 win over the Canadiens on November 9. At the time, the Maple Leafs went up 3-0. The second was a shorthanded assist on a goal by Auston Matthews at 7:58 of the third period in a 7-3 win over the Canadiens on January 18. At the time the Maple Leafs went up 5-3.
Roy is joining his third NHL team. He previously played two seasons with the Carolina Hurricanes from 2017 to 2019, and six seasons with the Vegas Golden Knights from 2019 to 2025. In 2024-25, Roy had 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points. He was a -4 with 43 penalty minutes, four power-play points, three game-winning goals, 107 shots on goal, 371 faceoff wins, 47 blocked shots, 72 hits, 20 takeaways, and 58 giveaways.
