Leylah Annie Fernandez wins 2025 Citi Open in Washington

Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal, Quebec won the 2025 Citi Open in Washington, District of Columbia on Sunday. In the final, Fernandez clobbered Anna Kalinskaya of Russia, 6-1, 6-2.

Fernandez read Kalinskaya’s serve extremely well. Fernandez broke Kalinskaya’s serve four times in six opportunities. Kalinskaya only had one break point chance. Fernandez won 58 of the 94 points in the match.

This was Fernandez’s second career win over Kalinskaya. Fernandez’s previous win was in the first round of Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2021, by a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

The win in Washington was Fernandez’s fourth WTA victory. She previously beat Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland 6-1, 6-4 in the final of Monterrey, Mexico in 2021, beat Camila Osorio of Colombia 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 in the final of Monterrey in 2022, and beat Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the final of Hong Kong in 2023.

Next up for Fernandez is the National Bank Open in Montreal, Fernandez’s birthplace. Fernandez will not have her first round matchup until Tuesday. In her match tomorrow, she will face Maya Joint, the American-born Australian. Fernandez beat Joint in their only prior matchup, and it came in the first round of the 2025 Citi Open in Washington, a week ago by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Fernandez had the statistical advantage when it came to the serve. Fernandez had five aces and two double faults, while Joint had zero aces and five double faults.
