After her first game at the 2025 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials at the Scotiabank Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, one would have expected Rachel Homan of Ottawa, Ontario to waltz right through to the finals of this prestigious national curling tournament. Well, folks. You have to think again.
On Sunday, Homan was upset 8-7 in 11 ends to Calgary’s Kayla Skrlik. Just how big of an upset was Skrlik’s win? It was the first time in 11 meetings that Skrlik has beaten Homan, and the first time in 413 days that Homan lost to a Canadian team. Homan had won 32 straight games against Canadian teams according to the Canadian Press.
Now the curling team on top of the women’s standings is Kerri Einarson of Gimli, Manitoba. Einarson has outscored her opponents 27-11 so far and is a perfect 3-0. On Sunday, she beat Kate Cameron of Winnipeg, Manitoba 6-5 and Kamloops’s Corryn Brown 9-1.
On the men’s side, there are two teams undefeated. They are Manitoba’s Matt Dunstone, and Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue. Both teams have records of two wins and zero losses. In Sunday’s action, Gushue beat Alberta’s Kevin Koe 5-3 and Dunstone beat Jordon McDonald 8-4 in an all-Winnipeg matchup. Gushue won the gold medal for Canada at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin.
