There was significant Canadian soccer news on Wednesday, as Juventus has signed striker Jonathan David of Ottawa, Ontario according to Rogers Sportsnet. The signing comes one year before David is expected to be one of Canada’s top players when the North American countries of Canada, the United States and Mexico are to host the 2026 World Cup. The overall terms of the contract from a financial perspective and length perspective have not yet been released.
David has been a prolific scorer over the last eight seasons. He had 30 goals in 60 games with Belgium’s Gent, and then had 87 goals in 178 games in France’s Lille. It will be interesting to see how David performs in Serie A action in one of the elite soccer programs in Europe.
This is a significant time in Canadian soccer. It is also important that Canada’s elite soccer players are as healthy as possible with the World Cup a year away. The other Canadian star, Alphonso Davies of Edmonton, Alberta, is currently out with a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in a 2-1 Canada win over the United States in the bronze medal game of the CONCACAF Nations League from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Davies is expected to return to Bayern Munich in November.
