Ilya Kharun wins two gold medals at World Cup of swimming event in Indianapolis

Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Ilya Kharun of Montreal, Quebec won four medals in a World Cup of Swimming event in Indianapolis, Indiana this past weekend. He won the gold medals in the men’s 50 metre butterfly and men’s 200 metre butterfly, silver medal in the men’s 100 metre butterfly, and bronze medal in the men’s 50 metre freestyle.

In the men’s 50 metre butterfly on Sunday, Kharun had a winning time of 21.86 seconds. Noe Ponti of Switzerland won the silver medal with a time of 21.9 seconds. Thomas Ceccon of Italy won the bronze medal with a time of 22.36 seconds. Kharun  reached the podium by 0.7 seconds over Canadian Josh Liendo of Toronto, Ontario, who had a fourth place time of 22.56 seconds.

In the men’s 200 metre butterfly on Saturday, Kharun had a winning time of 1:50.65. Gabriel Jett of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 1:51.01. Federico Burdisso of Italy won the bronze medal with a time of 1:52.06. Kharun reached the podium by 1.52 seconds. Trenton Julian of the United States finished in fourth place with a time of 1:52.17.

In the men’s 100 metre butterfly on Friday, Kharun had a second place time of 49.02 seconds. Ponti won the gold medal with a time of 48.53 seconds. Chad Le Clos of South Africa won the bronze medal with a time of 49.57 seconds. Kharun reached the podium by 1.18 seconds over Liendo, who had a fourth place time of 50.2 seconds.

In the men’s 50 metre freestyle on Friday, Kharun had a third place time of 20.89 seconds. Chris Guiliano of the United States won the gold medal with a time of 20.83 seconds. Jack Alexy of the United States won the silver medal with a time of 20.88 seconds. Kharun reached the podium by 0.23 seconds over Dylan Carter of Trinidad and Tobago, who had a fourth place time of 21.12 seconds.

Kharun won the bronze medal in the men’s 100 metre butterfly and the men’s 200 metre butterfly at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. His four medals will give him confidence as he prepares for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
