Gabriel Diallo of Montreal, Quebec is in the second round of the 2025 Madrid Open in Spain. On Thursday, Diallo upset Zizou Bergs of Belgium 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. Diallo is ranked 78th in the world and Bergs is ranked 50th.

Diallo had the slight advantage when it came to serving. He had four aces, while Bergs had three aces. Diallo also made the most of his opportunities as he broke Bergs four times in four opportunities. Bergs really struggled with his second serve, as he only won 38% of those points. Diallo, meanwhile, won 88% of his second serve points.

Next up for Diallo is Kamil Majchrzak of Poland. Both Diallo and Majchrzak got into the Madrid Open as a lucky loser. Diallo replaced Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan, who had a left shoulder injury, while Majchrzak replaced world number three Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, who is out with a groin injury.

The fact that Diallo is facing Majchrzak over Alcaraz should give Diallo a huge mental boost. Alcaraz is a four-time major champion (2022 United States Open, 2023 and 2024 Wimbledon and 2024 French Open), and won the 2022 and 2023 Madrid Open. In another interesting storyline, Diallo got into Indian Wells this year also as a lucky loser, and replaced Majchrzak in the draw, who withdrew because of neck pain. This will be the first meeting head to head between Diallo and Majchrzak.
