Four Canadians reached second round of the 2025 US Open

The second round of the 2025 United States Open starts on Wednesday. There are four Canadians in the second round, and all Canadians are seeded. They are Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec (seeded 25th), Denis Shapovalov of Toronto, Ontario (seeded 27th), Gabriel Diallo of Montreal (seeded 31st) on the men’s side, and Leylah Annie Fernandez of Montreal (seeded 31st) on the women’s side.

Auger-Aliassime, the 2021 United States Open semifinalist, defeated Billy Harris of Great Britain 6-4, 7-6, 6-4. Auger-Aliassime had 10 aces compared to zero for Harris. Next up for Auger-Aliassime is Roman Safiullin of Russia. Auger-Aliassime won their only prior match, 7-6, 7-6 in the semifinals of Marseille in 2022.

Shapovalov, the 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist, defeated Martons Fucsovics of Hungary, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. Shapovalov had the service advantage. He had eight aces and five double faults, and Fucsovics had one ace and eight double faults. Shapovalov broke Fucsovics eight times. Next up for Shapovalov is Valentin Royer of France.

Diallo defeated Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia and Herzegovina 7-6, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Diallo had the service advantage too. Diallo had 17 aces and two double faults, and Dzumhur had zero aces and seven double faults. Next up for Diallo is Jaume Munar of Spain. Diallo has beaten Munar twice. The first win came in the first round of the 2024 United States Open (6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5) and the second win came in the first round of Mallorca in 2025 (7-5, 6-3).

Fernandez, the 2021 United States Open finalist, beat fellow Canadian Rebecca Marino of Toronto 6-2, 6-1. Fernandez broke Marino five times. Fernandez next plays Elsa Jacquemot of France. This is their first meeting.
