Former National Hockey League goaltender Ed Giaciomin of Sudbury, Ontario has passed away at the age of 86. Giacomin, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987, played 11 seasons with the New York Rangers from 1965 to 1975, and three more seasons with the Detroit Red Wings from 1975 to 1977.
In 610 NHL regular season games, Giacomin had a record of 290 wins, 209 losses, and 96 ties. He had 54 shutouts with a goals against average of 2.82 and save percentage of .902.
Three straight seasons Giacomin led the NHL in wins. He had 30 wins in 1966-67, 36 wins in 1967-68, and 38 wins in 1968-69. Giacomin also led the NHL with most shutouts in a season three times. He had nine shutouts in 1966-67, eight shutouts in 1967-68, and eight shutouts in 1970-71.
Six times Giacomin was a NHL All-Star. He was honoured five straight seasons from 1967 to 1971, and again in 1972-73.
In 1970-71, Giacomin won the Vezina Trophy despite only playing 45 games. He had played 70 games each in 1968-69 and 1969-70. One reason Giacomin won the 1971 Vezina Trophy is because he led the NHL with eight shutouts.
After retirement from playing, Giacomin was a broadcaster for the New York Islanders. He later was an assistant coach for the Rangers, Red Wings and Islanders. Then on March 15, 1989, the Rangers retired Giacomin’s number one.
