
The Philadelphia Flyers have named Rick Tocchet as their new head coach according to Josh Erickson of Pro Hockey Rumors on Wednesday. Tocchet replaces interim head coach Brad Shaw of Cambridge, Ontario.
This is Tocchet’s fourth National Hockey League head coaching job. He was previously with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2008 t0 2010, with the Arizona Coyotes from 2017 to 2021, and with the Vancouver Canucks from 2022 to 2025. Tocchet’s head coaching record is 286 wins, 265 regulation losses, and 87 losses in extra time. He also won the Jack Adams Award with the Canucks in 2023-24.
Tocchet also spent seven seasons as a NHL assistant coach. He was with the Colorado Avalanche from 2002 to 2004, the Phoenix Coyotes from 2005 to 2006, and the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2014 to 2017. In 2016 and 2017, Tocchet won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Penguins.
As a player, Tocchet also won a Stanley Cup. He was part of the Penguins team that won in 1992. In 1144 NHL regular season games as a right winger, Tocchet had 440 goals and 512 assists for 952 points with the Philadelphia Flyers (1984 to 1992, and 2000 to 2002), the Pittsburgh Penguins (1992 to 1994), the Los Angeles Kings (1994 to 1996), the Boston Bruins (1996 to 1997), the Washington Capitals (1997), and the Phoenix Coyotes (1997 to 2000) . He was a +84 with 14 hat tricks, 2970 penalty minutes, 262 power-play points, 16 shorthanded points, 50 game-winning goals, and 2806 shots on goal. Tocchet was also a NHL All-Star four times. He was honoured with the Flyers for three straight years from 1989 to 1991, and one year with the Penguins in 1993.
