Flyers name Brad Shaw interim head coach

The Philadelphia Flyers have named Brad Shaw interim head coach according to Rogers Sportsnet. Shaw replaces John Tortorella, who was fired on Thursday.

At the time of the coaching change, the Flyers were last in the Metropolitan Division. They only had 65 points.

This will be Shaw’s second time as a National Hockey League head coach. He coached the New York Islanders for 40 games in the 2005-06 season. Shaw had a record of 18 wins, 18 losses, and four losses in extra time.

Shaw has 19 years of experience as a NHL assistant coach. He was with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 1999-2000, the New York Islanders from 2005-2006, the St. Louis Blues from 2006-2016, the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2016-2021, the Vancouver Canucks from 2021-2022, and the Flyers from 2022-2026. Shaw does have head coaching experience with the Detroit Vipers of the International Hockey League (2000-2001), and with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the American Hockey League (2002-2005).

As a player, Shaw spent 11 seasons as a NHL defenseman. He was with the Hartford Whalers from 1985-1992, the Ottawa Senators from 1992-1995, and shared his time with the Washington Capitals and St. Louis Blues in 1998-99. In 377 games, Shaw had 22 goals and 137 assists for 159 points. He was a -93 with 208 penalty minutes, 94 power-play points, one game-winning goal, five shorthanded points, and 613 shots on goal.

Shaw’s game-winning goal came on February 16, 1991 in a 2-1 Whalers win over the Montreal Canadiens at the Montreal Forum. Shaw scored from Mike Tomiak of Thunder Bay, Ontario and Todd Krygier at 16:16 of the first period which put Hartford up 2-0 at the time.
