The Calgary Flames have traded defenseman MacKenzie Weegar of Ottawa, Ontario to the Utah Mammoth for defenseman Olli Maatta, centre Jonathan Castagna and three second round draft picks in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft according to Rogers Sportsnet.
The Mammoth become the third team Weegar has played for. He previously played six seasons with the Florida Panthers and four seasons with the Calgary Flames.
In 60 games with the Flames this season, Weegar has three goals and 18 assists for 21 points in 60 games. He has 69 penalty minutes, five power-play points, one shorthanded point, 125 shots on goal, 143 blocked shots, 130 hits, 19 takeaways, and 98 giveaways. However it is a -35 which stands out for Weegar this season. That is the worst plus/minus in the NHL.
Weegar’s shorthanded point came in a 6-3 Flames win over the Vegas Golden Knights on December 20. At 12:21 of the second period, Weegar set up Joel Farabee to put the Flames up 5-1 at the time.
In other NHL news, the Vancouver Canucks have traded American-born Canadian defenseman Tyler Myers to the Dallas Stars for a second round pick in 2027 and a fourth round pick in 2029. Myers has eight points in 57 games this season, but also has a poor plus/minus of -25. He has previously played for the Buffalo Sabres and Winnipeg Jets.
