Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec is in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Shanghai Masters. He got there by delivering a fourth round upset. On Wednesday, Auger-Aliassime, the 12th seed, upset the eighth seed, Lorenzo Musetti of Italy, 6-4, 6-2.
Auger-Aliassime had the slight service advantage. He had six aces, while Musetti had three. Auger-Aliassime also broke Musetti three times in six opportunities.
This was the fourth time in eight opportunities that Auger-Aliassime has beaten Musetti. He also won 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the fourth round of Barcelona in 2021, 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals of Florence in 2022, and 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of the 2022 Davis Cup.
Next up for Auger-Aliassime in the quarterfinals on Friday is Arthur Rinderknech of France, the 54th ranked player in the world. Auger-Aliassime has beaten Rinderknech twice in two meetings before. Both wins have come in 2025. The first win was in the second round of Mallorca in 2025 (7-5, 6-3), and the second win was in the third round of Cincinnati (7-6, 4-2). Rinderknech withdrew due to heat exhaustion. That is something to keep in mind in Shanghai tomorrow, as it is supposed be 31 degrees Celsius and rather hot.
Australia’s Alex de Minaur will play Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in the other quarterfinal on Friday. One semifinal has been determined. Novak Djokovic of Serbia will face Valentin Vacherot of Monaco.
