Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal, Quebec is in the fourth round of the 2025 United States Open in Flushing Meadows, New York. What we saw from Auger-Aliassime was brilliant shotmaking for over three hours. It led to a four set victory, where he beat Germany’s Alexander Zverev by a score of 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Auger-Aliaasime won 20 more points in the match than Zverev. Auger-Aliassime won 141 points and Zverev won 121 points.
This was the first time in Auger-Aliassime’s career that he beat a top five player at a major. Zverev was the third seed.
Both players had gone deep in majors before. Auger-Aliassime reached the semifinals of the 2021 United States Open, and Zverev reached the final of the United States Open in 2020, the French Open in 2024, and the Australian Open in 2025.
This was the second straight major that Zverev underperformed. Zverev lost the first round of Wimbledon to Arthur Rinderknech of France by a score of 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
Next up in the fourth round for Auger-Aliassime is Russia’s Andrey Rublev, the 15th seed. In an amazing statistic, Rublev has reached 10 grand slam quarterfinals, and has lost them all in his career. Auger-Aliassime has only beaten Rublev once in eight meetings. That came in the semifinals of Rotterdam in 2022, which Auger-Aliassime won 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.
