Evan Dunfee wins gold in men’s 35km walk at IAAF World Championships

Canadian Olympic bronze medalist Evan Dunfee of Richmond, British Columbia won the gold medal on Friday (Saturday in Japan) in the men’s 35 kilometre walk at the 2025 International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships in Tokyo.

Dunfee had a winning time of two hours, 28 minutes and 22 seconds. Caio Bonfim of Brazil won the silver medal with a time of two hours, 28 minutes and 55 seconds. Hayato Katsuki of Japan won the bronze medal with a time of two hours, 29 minutes and 16 seconds. Dunfee reached the podium by one minute and nine seconds. Yingcheng Zhou of China finished in fourth place with a time of two hours, 29 minutes and 31 seconds.

This was Dunfee’s second career medal at the World Athletics Championships. He previously won the bronze medal in the men’s 50 kilometre walk a the 2019 IAAF World Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Dunfee’s Olympic medal also came in Tokyo. It was a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021.

It should be noted that Dunfee won gold at the World Championships in an event that will not take place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. At the Olympic Games two years from now, there will only be a 21 km walk for the men. The men’s 20 kilometre race walk at the World Championships in Tokyo will be on Friday, September 19 (Saturday, September 20 in Japan).
