Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta will be hosting the 2027 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Men’s Hockey Championship according to the Canadian Press on Tuesday. This will be the fifth time the tournament is being hosted in the province of Alberta. Red Deer, Calgary and Edmonton co-hosted the tournament in 1995 with Red Deer as the primary city. Calgary and Edmonton co-hosted the World Juniors in 2012, while Edmonton was the host in 2021 and 2022.

The 2021 World Junior Hockey Championships did not have spectators because of the Coronavirus pandemic. The 2022 World Junior Hockey Championship began in Edmonton and Red Deer but did not initially finish because of the Coronavirus pandemic. The tournament was rescheduled for August, and when the tournament resumed, games were played to very sparse crowds. This was a dark time in Hockey Canada history as several sponsors suspended their support for Hockey Canada due to the sexual assault scandal in London, Ontario.

The 2026 World Junior Hockey Championship is in Minneapolis/St. Paul. The Americans have won the last two World Junior events. They won in 2024 in Gothenburg, Sweden, and in 2025 in Ottawa, Ontario. It has been an abysmal tournament for Canada the last two years. The team played poorly as a whole and failed to win a medal.
