Connor McDavid records his 16th career NHL hat trick

Edmonton Oilers centre Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario recorded his 16th career National Hockey League hat trick on Wednesday. He accomplished the feat in a 5-2 Oilers win over the San Jose Sharks at the SAP Center in San Jose, California. McDavid also had two assists for five points.

McDavid’s first goal tied the game at one at 6:18 of the first period on the power-play. Defenseman Evan Bouchard of Oakville, Ontario and Vasily Podkolzin had the assists. McDavid then put the Oilers up 4-2 at 5:53 of the second period from Bouchard and Mattias Ekholm with a highlight reel goal. Then McDavid closed out the scoring on a goal from Jack Roslovic at 14:13 of the second period. McDavid’s assists came on goals from Podkolzin and Roslovic.

For the season, McDavid leads the NHL in assists (86), and points (133). He also has 47 goals, is a +16 with 38 penalty minutes, 52 power-play points, two shorthanded points, four game-winning goals, 297 shots on goal, 433 faceoff wins, 30 blocked shots, 39 hits, 28 takeaways, and 129 giveaways.

McDavid’s first shorthanded point was a shorthanded assist on a goal by Leon Draisaitl into an empty net to close out the scoring with one minute and 13 seconds left in the third period in a 3-1 Oilers win over the Vancouver Canucks on October 11. McDavid’s second shorthanded point was a shorthanded goal and came on an all-Canadian goal in a 3-1 Oilers win over the Boston Bruins on December 18, 2025. McDavid scored from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Burnaby, British Columbia and defenseman Darnell Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario at 1:41 of the third period to close out the scoring.

With the win over the Sharks, the Oilers improve to a record of 40 wins, 29 regulation losses and 10 losses in extra time for 90 points. They lead the Pacific Division but have not clinched a playoff spot yet. Their lead over the ninth place Los Angeles Kings is seven points.
