Colten Ellis records first career NHL shutout

Buffalo Sabres rookie goaltender Colten Ellis of River Denys, Nova Scotia recorded his first National Hockey League shutout on Thursday. He accomplished the feat in a dominant 5-0 Sabres win over the Columbus Blue Jackets at the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.

Ellis made 37 saves overall. He made 10 saves in the first period, 14 saves in the second period, and 13 saves in the third period.

Defenseman Logan Stanley of Kitchener, Ontario led the Sabres in scoring with two points. He had two assists. Two Canadians scored for the Sabres. They were Peyton Krebs of Calgary, Alberta, who scored the game-winning goal at 13:41 of the first period, and Jack Quinn of Ottawa, Ontario.

For the season, Ellis has a record of eight wins, four regulation losses and one loss in extra time with one shutout. He has a goals against average of 2.91 and a save percentage of .904.

With the win, the Sabres improved to a record of 49 wins, 23 regulation losses and eight losses in extra time for 106 points. They are in first place in the Atlantic Division, and have a two point lead on the second place Montreal Canadiens. Buffalo has the third most points in the NHL. They are only behind the Colorado Avalanche (114 points) and the Carolina Hurricanes (108 points).
