Canadian women’s hockey player Rebecca Johnston retires at age 36

Canadian Olympic gold medalist Rebecca Johnston of Sudbury, Ontario has retired at the age of 36 according to Postmedia Sports on Friday. Johnston won three gold medals for Canada at the Olympic Winter Games in women’s hockey. They came at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi and thee 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing.

Johnston was also part of the Canadian team that won silver at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in Pyeongchang. She also won 11 medals for Canada at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Women’s Hockey Championships. The gold medals came in 2012 in Burlington, Vermont and in 2021 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

On the international side, Johnston had 30 goals and 42 assists for 72 points in 76 games. Her finest international tournament came at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing. She was seventh in the tournament in scoring with 10 points (two goals and eight assists).

Johnston also won the gold medal for Team Ontario in women’s hockey at the 2007 Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon. From there she attended Cornell University at the National Collegiate Athletic Association level. In 2014-15, Johnston led the Canadian Women’s Hockey League in scoring (37 points) while with the Calgary Inferno, and in the process won the Angela James Bowl. Then in 2016, she was part of the Inferno team to win the Clarkson Cup.
