Team Canada won the silver medal on Sunday at the 2022 World Men’s Curling Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Canadian team based in St. John’s, Newfoundland, was comprised of skip Brad Gushue, third Mark Nichols, second Brett Gallant, and lead Geoff Walker.
The Canadian team lost the gold medal game 8-6 to a Swedish team skipped by Niklas Edin. This was the sixth gold medal for Edin at the World Men’s Curling Championship. Of the six World Championships, he has beaten Canada in the final on four occasions. Edin has previously beaten Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario in 2013 in Victoria, British Columbia, in 2018 over Gushue, and in 2019 over Kevin Koe of Calgary, Alberta in Lethbridge, Alberta.
In the final on Sunday, Gushue had a brilliant opportunity to take control of the game, and keep the hammer for the 10th end. He had a chance to blank the end, but inadvertently hit the Swedish rock and stuck around for a single point. That forced Gushue to lose the hammer. In the 10th end, Walker was unable to get his final stone over the hog line, and Edin took control of the end from there.
This is the second world curling championship Gallant will be competing in this month. He is teaming up with his fiancee, Jocelyn Peterman of Red Deer, Alberta, to represent Canada at the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Geneva, Switzerland, starting April 23.
