Canada wins bronze at a Women’s Rugby Sevens World Championship in Los Angeles

Team Canada won the bronze medal in the HSBC Women’s Rugby Sevens World Championship in Los Angeles, California on Sunday. In the bronze medal game, Canada trounced the United States 27-7. New Zealand defeated Australia 31-7 in the gold medal final.

In the bronze medal game, Asia Hogan-Rochester of Toronto, Ontario led Canada with three tries. Charity Williams of Toronto and Carissa Norsten of Waldheim, Saskatchewan also had tries.

Canada finished Pool A with a record of two wins and one loss. They defeated Japan 26-0 and Great Britain 26-17, before losing 41-5 to New Zealand.

In Canada’s win over Japan, Hogan-Rochester had two tries, while Florence Symonds of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Olivia Apps of Toronto had one try each. In Canada’s win over Great Britain, the four Canadians with tries were Symonds, Apps, Williams and Hogan-Rochester.

Canada is coming off a silver medal in women’s rugby sevens at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This season, Canada won two bronze medals in World Series play. The first was in Hong Kong and the second was in Singapore. The bronze medal in Los Angeles is the third straight medal for Canada in a major international competition in women’s rugby sevens and will give Canada extra confidence as they prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
