
Team Canada is in the semifinals of the Olympic men’s hockey tournament. On Wednesday from Arena Milano, Canada defeated Czech Republic 4-3 in the second of four quarterfinal games.
Canada was led offensively by San Jose Sharks centre Macklin Celebrini of North Vancouver, British Columbia. Celebrini had one goal and two assists for three points.
Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid of Richmond Hill, Ontario was the only other Canadian player with a multi-point game. He had two assists. The three other Canadian goal scorers were Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Montreal Canadiens centre Nick Suzuki of London, Ontario, and Vegas Golden Knights right winger Mitch Marner of Markham, Ontario.
Suzuki and Marner scored dramatic goals. Suzuki’s goal came with three minutes and 27 seconds left in the third period to force overtime. Then in thew extra period, Marner stickhandled his way through three Czech players and scored past Lukas Dostal at 1:22 of the extra period.
Canada will now play Finland in the semifinals. The United States will play Slovakia in the other semifinal game. In the other quarterfinal games on Wednesday, Slovakia trounced Germany 6-2, Finland beat Switzerland 3-2 in overtime, and the United States beat Sweden 2-1 in overtime.
