
Team Canada has won their first game at the 2025 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland. On Boxing Day, Canada defeated the United States 3-2 at the Eisstadion Davos. Team Canada is comprised mostly of players in the American Hockey League, and players playing professionally in Europe. The United States are a Collegiate Selects team, comprised of elite players at the National College Athletics Association level. However, the team is not limited to Americans. On the U.S. Collegiate Selects Team are six Canadians, one Slovakian, and one Latvian.
In the Team Canada Boxing Day win, Canada scored all three of their goals in the second period. The Canadian goal scorers were Nate Schnarr of Waterloo, Ontario, Brett Seney of London, Ontario, and Mason Shaw of Wainwright, Alberta. Meanwhile, Derek Grant of Abbotsford, British Columbia led Canada in scoring with two points as he had two assists.
Seney, Shaw, and Grant have National Hockey League experience. Seney played 66 games over five seasons from 2018 to 2024. He played for the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks. Shaw played 82 games with the Minnesota Wild from 2021 to 2024. Grant played 427 games with the Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres, Nashville Predators, Anaheim Ducks, Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers from 2012 to 2023.
