
Team Canada has won their opening game of the 2026 World Baseball Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico. On Saturday in Pool A action, Canada defeated Colombia by a score of 8-2.
Canada’s big hit came from left fielder Owen Caissie of Burlington, Ontario. The new member of the Miami Marlins hit a two-run home run in the second inning with two out. The dinger also scored Kansas City Royals third baseman Abraham Toro of Longueuil, Quebec and put Canada up 2-0.
Caissie and Toro were two of three Canadian players to have two hits in the game. The other was Seattle Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor of Mississauga, Ontario. Both of Toro’s hits in the game were extra base hits. He hit a double and a triple. Caissie and Toro also scored two runs each.
On the mound, Arizona Diamondbacks starting pitcher Mike Soroka of Calgary, Alberta got the win, as he gave up one earned run in three innings of work. Meanwhile, Indigo Diaz of Vancouver, British Columbia, Noah Skirrow of Cambridge, Ontario, Micah Ashman and Eric Cerantola of Montreal, Quebec recorded holds.
Canada next plays Panama on Sunday. It has been a tough tournament for Panama so far as they lost 3-1 to Cuba and 4-3 to Puerto Rico.
