Team Canada has won their first match of the 2026 United Cup tennis tournament in Sydney, Australia. On Sunday, Canada defeated China three matches to none in Group B action. The tournament is unique as it includes players on the ATP and WTA tours.
Victoria Mboko of Burlington, Ontario defeated Zhu Lin of China 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, and Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime defeated Zhizhen Zhang 6-4, 6-4. Then in doubles action, Mboko and Auger-Aliassime teamed up to beat You Xiaodi and Rigele Te, 6-1, 6-3.
Canada next faces Belgium on Monday night (Tuesday in Sydney). Belgium lost their tie to China two matches to one on Saturday. However, China is eliminated as they lost four of six matches.
Three nations have already clinched their spot to the quarterfinals. They are the United States, Switzerland, and Greece.
Switzerland is led by Stanislas Wawrinka of Lausanne and Belinda Bencic of Flawil. Wawrinka is a three-time grand slam champion as he has won the 2014 Australian Open, 2015 French Open, and 2016 United States Open. Wawrinka announced earlier this year that the 2026 tennis season would be his last. Bencic, meanwhile, is a two-time grand slam semifinalist. She reached the final four of the United States Open in 2019 and Wimbledon in 2025. Switzerland won Group C in Perth with two very impressive wins over France and Italy.
