Bruins name Jim Montgomery head coach

The Boston Bruins have named Jim Montgomery of Montreal, Quebec as their new head coach according to the Canadian Press. This is the second coaching job for Montgomery as he was previously the head coach of the Dallas Stars from 2018 to 2020. Montgomery takes over from Bruce Cassidy of Ottawa, Ontario, who was fired by the Bruins as their head coach on June 6, and then hired eight days later by the Vegas Golden Knights as their head coach on June 14.

Montgomery had a regular season record of 61 wins, 43 regulation losses, and 10 losses in extra time. In addition to being a National Hockey League head coach, Montgomery was the head coach of the Dubuque Fighting Saints from 2010 to 2013. In that time, he guided the Fighting Saints to two Clark Cup titles in 2011 and 2013. After that, Montgomery was the head coach of the University of Denver Pioneers in the National Collegiate Athletic Association from 2013 to 2018.

Montgomery also has a lot of experience as an assistant coach. He was with the Missouri River Otters from 2004-05, with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish of the NCAA from 2005 to 2006, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Engineers from 2006 to 2010, and the St. Louis Blues the last two seasons. As a NHL player, Montgomery played 122 regular season games as a center from 1993 to 2003 with the St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens, Philadelphia Flyers, San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars. He had nine goals and 25 assists for 34 points with 80 penalty minutes, and was a -6.
