We now have one day left in pool play at the 2026 Montana’s Brier in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and what we saw on Wednesday was an impressive upset. In the afternoon draw, Braden Calvert of Winnipeg, the sixth seed in the tournament, knocked off Mike McEwen of Saskatchewan, the third seed in the tournament, by a score of 9-4.

With the win, Calvert improved to a record of four wins and two losses, and controls his own destiny in trying to make the playoffs. The Manitoba provincial champion out of the Heather Curling Club is playoff bound with wins over New Brunswick and Northern Ontario.

Another team that controls their own destiny on Thursday in trying to make the playoffs is Ontario’s Jayden King. The Ontario champion is in with a win over Saskatchewan’s Kelly Knapp. Quebec’s Jean-Michel Menard is in with a win over Prince Edward Island and an Ontario loss to Saskatchewan.

There are currently three teams undefeated and playoff bound. They are Team Canada’s Brad Jacobs, Newfoundland’s Brad Gushue and Alberta’s Kevin Koe. Jacobs and Gushue are both at seven wins and zero losses, while Koe is at six wins and zero losses. Gushue will face Jacobs for first place in Group A on Thursday at 11 AM MT.
