Bianca Andreescu stuns Elena Rybakina at 2025 Italian Open

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario delivered one of her most impressive tennis performances in quite some time. On Sunday in the third round of the 2025 Italian Open, Andreescu defeated Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 6-2, 6-4.

This was a battle of major champions and considered a significant upset based on the WTA rankings. Rybakina was seeded 11th in Rome and won the 2022 Wimbledon. Andreescu is ranked 121st in the world and won the United States Open in 2019. This was Andreescu’s first career win in four meetings against Rybakina.

In Sunday’s match, Andreescu was the more consistent server. She had zero double faults, while Rybakina had three. Andreescu also had a first serve of 88%, compared to 47% for Rybakina. Andreescu won 68% of her points on her first serve, and 75% of points on her second serve. Rybakina only won 56% of her points on the first and second serve. Andreescu also saw Rybkina’s serve extremely well as she broke Rybakina three times in six opportunities, while Rybakina did not break Andreescu’s serve once.

Next up in the fourth round on Monday, Andreescu will face the reigning Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng of China, the eighth seed, and 2024 Australian Open gold medalist from the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Zheng won their only prior meeting. That came at the 2022 National Bank Open in Toronto in the third round which Zheng won 7-5, 5-7, 6-2.
