
Antonia and Georgia Lewin-LaFrance of Montreal, Quebec won the gold medal on Saturday in the women’s 49er FX class at a Grand Slam sailing event in Palma de Majorca, Spain according to the Canadian Press. The specific name of the grand slam event is the Princess Sofia Trophy.
The Lewin-LaFrance sisters won the gold medal with 46 total points. Sophie Steinlein and Catherine Bartelheimer of Germany won the silver medal with 47 points and Paula Barcelo and Maria Cantero of Spain won the bronze medal with 47 points. Steinlein and Batelheimer got the tie-breaker over Barcelo and Cantero because of the result in the final race. Steinlein and Batelheimer were fourth and Barcelo and Cantero were 10th.
Antonia and Georgia Lewin-LaFrance reached the podium by two points. Vilma Bobeck and Ebba Berntsson of Sweden finished in fourth place with 48 points.
For the Lewin-LaFrance sisters, this was their first Grand Slam gold medal and third Grand Slam medal overall. They won the bronze medal in France and Germany last year.
This was the first of five grand slam sailing regattas on the sailing calendar in 2026. The other four are in Hyeres, France (from April 18-25), Almere, Netherlands (from May 30 to June 7), Kiel, Germany (from June 20 to June 28), and Long Beach, California (July 13 to August 8).
The Lewis-LaFrance sisters won the bronze medal in the women’s 49er FX category at the 2025 Sailing World Championships in Cagliari, Italy. The gold medal in Spain will give them confidence as they prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
