Antonia and Georgia Lewin-Lafrance of Montreal, Quebec won the bronze medal in the women’s 49erFX category at the 2025 Sailing World Championships in Cagliari, Italy on Sunday. The world championship was only for sailors in the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 classes.

It should noted that Antonia and Georgia are sisters. They were raised in Chester, Nova Scotia. This was the first time ever that Canada won a medal in the women’s 49erFX at the Sailing World Championships. Paula Barcelo and Maria Cantero of Spain won the gold medal and Vilma Bobeck and Ebba Berntsson of Sweden won the silver medal.

This was the fourth significant medal for Antonia and Georgia Lewin-Lafrance on the 2025 calendar. According to Hayley McGoldrick of the Canadian Olympic Committee, they also won the silver medal at the European Sailing Championships in Thessaloniki, Greece in June, and bronze medals at the famous French Olympic Week and the Kiel Week in Germany. The French Olympic Week and the Kiel Week are both part of the Sailing Grand Slam Series. The bronze medal in the women’s 49erFX category at the 2025 Sailing World Championships will give Antonia and Georgia Lewin-Lafrance confidence as they prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
