According to Nicholas Cotsonika of nhl.com on Tuesday, Anaheim Ducks captain and Canadian Olympic gold medalist Ryan Getzlaf of Regina, Saskatchewan plans to retire at the end of the 2021-22 National Hockey League regular season. Getzlaf, who won a gold medal for Canada at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver and at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, has played 17 seasons with the Ducks since the 2005-06 regular season.

In 1150 regular season games, Getzlaf has 282 goals, and 731 assists for 1013 points. He is also a +105 with 954 penalty minutes, 340 power-play points, 14 shorthanded points, 57 game-winning goals, and 2550 shots on goal. In an interesting statistic, despite having 449 more assists than goals in his career, Getzlaf actually has more shorthanded goals in his career (eight), than shorthanded assists (six).

Getzlaf’s finest NHL season came in 2008-09. That year he had career-highs in assists (66), and points (91). At the time Getzlaf was considered an elite power forward, as he had 121 penalty minutes too. Getzlaf’s 66 assists that season were the third most in the NHL. Getzlaf was only behind Evgeni Malkin (78 assists), and Sidney Crosby of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia (70 assists). Malkin and Crosby were both with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In the postseason, Getzlaf had 37 goals and 83 assists for 120 points in 125 games. He was also part of the Ducks team that won the 2007 Stanley Cup.
