
Adam Svensson of Surrey, British Columbia is the leader after the second round on Saturday of the 2023 Players Championship in Jacksonville, Florida. At the nostalgic golf course of TPC Sawgrass, created by architect Pete Dye, Svensson is at -9, and has a two-stroke lead over reigning Masters champion Scottie Scheffler of the United States, who is at -7.
Svensson had a first round score of -4 and a second round score of -5. In the first round on Thursday, he had five birdies and one bogey. Svensson birdied the second, 12th, 15th, 16th, and 17th holes, and bogeyed the 18th hole. In the second round on Friday, he had six birdies and one bogey. Svensson birdied the first, second, fifth, ninth, 11th and 16th holes, and bogeyed the third hole.
There are four more golfers in contention at -6, and three strokes back of Svensson. They are Americans Benjamin Griffin and Collin Morikawa, along with Australia’s Min Woo Lee, and South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout. Like Scheffler, Morikawa is a major champion. He won the 2020 PGA Championship and 2021 British Open.
Svensson is currently 57th in the Official World Golf Rankings. Last year he won the 2022 RSM Classic in Saint Simons Island, Georgia.
One Canadian has won the Players Championship in the past. Stephen Ames of Vancouver, British Columbia won in 2006.
