Edmonton Oilers defenseman Mike Green retires at age 34

According to Zach Laing of Oilers Nation on Friday, defenseman Mike Green of Calgary, Alberta is set to retire at age 34. Green played 15 National Hockey League seasons with the Washington Capitals, Detroit Red Wings, and Edmonton Oilers from 2005 to 2020. Green made headlines prior to the NHL restart when he decided not to join the Oilers for their 2020 playoff run. The Oilers struggled defensively against the Chicago Blackhawks and lost in four games in the first round qualifier.

in 50 games this season, Green had three goals and eight assists for 11 points. He was a -34 with 32 penalty minutes, four power play points, one game winning goal, 76 shots on goal, 66 blocked shots, 61 hits, 12 takeaways, and 41 giveaways. Green’s lone power play goal and game winning goal in 2019-20 came on December 14, 2019, in a 2-1 Red Wings win over the Montreal Canadiens.

A two-time NHL All-Star with the Capitals in 2009 and 2010, Green had his best NHL season with Washington in 2009-10. That season he had career highs in assists (57), points (76), plus/minus (+39), and hits (133). In 76 playoff games, Green had 10 goals and 27 assists for 37 points. Green had 150 goals, 351 assists for 501 points, was a -17 with 592 penalty minutes, 213 power play points, three shorthanded points, 23 game winning goals,  and 1918 shots on goal. Green’s lone shorthanded goal came in a 3-1 Capitals win over the Florida Panthers on February 7, 2009.

In 2008-09, Green made hockey history. He set the NHL record for the longest consecutive goal scoring streak by a defenseman. At eight games, he broke the record previously set by Mike O’Connell, who scored in seven straight games for the Boston Bruins in 1983-84.
